Starting school is a big event and should be an exciting time for children and their grown-ups, and there’s plenty you can do to make sure the transition from home or a preschool setting goes as smoothly as possible - including visiting the school, practising the journey, keeping a consistent routine and reading books to encourage conversation about what to expect and how they might be feeling. It’s easy to focus on the practical issues in a flurry of labelling things, buying shoes and filling in forms, but it’s also important to make sure your child is as well prepared as possible in terms of their emotional, social, language and self-care skills. The less time teachers have to spend helping children with these basic skills, the more time they will have to help with the learning and other fun stuff!
